Frequently asked questions
What is cystitis?
Cystitis is inflammation of the bladder, most often caused by a urinary tract infection (UTI). It's very common, particularly in women, largely because the female urethra is shorter and sits closer to the back passage, making it easier for bacteria to reach the bladder. Flare-ups can be triggered by sex, certain hygiene products, dehydration, or holding in urine for long periods. Most cases are mild and settle within a few days, but some need treatment to clear fully and to stop the infection spreading to the kidneys.
Common symptoms of cystitis
Cystitis can come on quickly and affects people differently, but the most common signs can include:
• Painful, stinging or burning sensation when passing urine
• A frequent or urgent need to wee, often with little coming out
• Cloudy, dark or strong-smelling urine
• Pain or pressure low in the tummy or around the pelvis
• Traces of blood in the urine
• Feeling generally unwell, tired or low.
Symptoms that are severe, last more than a few days, or are accompanied by a high temperature, back or side pain, or feeling sick can suggest a more serious infection and should be assessed promptly.Do I need antibiotics for cystitis?
Mild cystitis can sometimes ease on its own with self-care, such as drinking plenty of water, resting, and using over-the-counter pain relief. Prescription antibiotics are usually needed when symptoms are more severe, persist beyond two or three days, or keep coming back.
During your Pharmulous consultation, our clinicians assess your symptoms, medical history and any current medications to decide whether antibiotics are appropriate and, if so, which one suits you best.Cystitis treatments
As a trusted pharmacy for cystitis treatment, we provide prescription antibiotics where clinically suitable, prescribed by UK-registered clinicians and matched to your individual needs.
A commonly prescribed option is Nitrofurantoin 100mg M/R capsules, licensed to treat acute and recurrent uncomplicated urinary tract infections and typically taken twice daily for seven days. It isn't suitable for everyone, so a Pharmulous clinician will confirm whether it's the right choice for you.
Alongside treatment, our team offers practical guidance on easing symptoms and reducing the chance of future flare-ups. If your symptoms point to another cause, such as a different infection, our clinicians will recommend the most appropriate next step rather than prescribing antibiotics unnecessarily. How to buy cystitis tablets online
