- Wegovy Tablets for Maintenance: What...

Wegovy tablets are one of the biggest weight-management updates of the year.
For patients who have already lost weight on GLP-1 treatment, the question is not always “how do I lose more?” Sometimes it becomes: how do I maintain what I have achieved?
That is where Wegovy tablets may become an option for some patients, particularly those interested in maintaining weight after GLP-1 treatment over the long term.
GLP-1 treatment is becoming a long-term health conversation
GLP-1 treatment is no longer just a short-term weight-loss trend. It is becoming a growing part of long-term semaglutide treatment and long-term health management.
Recent UK estimates suggest around 1.9 million adults in Britain are now using GLP-1 medicines, with 6.3% of households including at least one GLP-1 user, according to Worldpanel by Numerator's 2026 GLP-1 consumer research, which surveyed more than 11,500 UK households.
Other UK survey data from The Food Foundation has estimated that around 3.85 million adults have either used or are currently using weight-loss injections, with millions more considering them.
However, there is not yet a reliable public UK figure showing exactly how many people are using GLP-1s specifically for maintenance rather than active weight loss. This is still an emerging area but as more patients reach their goal weight, maintenance planning is becoming increasingly important.
What does maintenance mean?
Maintenance means keeping your weight stable after weight loss, rather than continuing to lose large amounts of weight.
This may involve:
- Staying on treatment at a suitable dose
- Reviewing appetite control
- Monitoring side effects
- Supporting nutrition and protein intake
- Maintaining movement and strength
- Avoiding weight regain
- Having regular clinical reviews
At Pharmulous, maintenance is not about automatically staying on the highest dose or restarting from the beginning. It is about finding the safest, most suitable option for your body, lifestyle and long-term goals.
Why maintenance matters
Clinical studies show that stopping GLP-1 treatment can lead to weight regain for some patients. This does not mean everyone must stay on treatment forever, but it does show why maintenance should be planned rather than guessed. Understanding the risk of weight regain after stopping Wegovy is an important part of developing a personalised maintenance strategy.
The STEP 4 trial demonstrated that people who continued semaglutide maintained or continued to lose weight, whereas those switched to placebo experienced significant weight regain despite ongoing lifestyle support.
A good maintenance plan should look at:
- Whether your appetite remains controlled
- Whether your weight is stable
- Whether side effects are manageable
- Whether your nutrition and protein intake are adequate
- Whether you are maintaining muscle and strength
- Whether treatment remains clinically appropriate
Where could Wegovy tablets fit in?
Wegovy tablets contain semaglutide, the same active ingredient as Wegovy injections, but are taken once daily instead of once weekly.
For some patients, tablets may feel easier for maintenance because they:
- Avoid injections
- May be easier when travelling
- Fit better into a daily routine
- Offer another option if injections are becoming difficult
- Give patients more choice in how they manage long-term treatment
For many people comparing Wegovy vs injections, tablets may provide a convenient alternative while still supporting long-term weight management. However, tablets are not automatically better. They need to be taken correctly every day to work properly.
How are Wegovy tablets taken?
Wegovy tablets have strict administration instructions.
They usually need to be taken:
- First thing in the morning
- After fasting overnight
- With a small amount of water only
- Whole, not crushed or chewed
- At least 30 minutes before food, drink or other medicines
If this routine would be difficult, a weekly injection may still be the better option.
Do you have to start at the lowest dose?
Not always.
If you are completely new to GLP-1 treatment, you would usually start at the lowest initiation dose so your body can adjust.
However, if you are already established on GLP-1 treatment, such as Wegovy injections or Mounjaro injections, your clinician may consider a different starting point depending on your current dose, treatment history, side effects, weight stability and clinical suitability.
This does not mean doses are directly interchangeable. Mounjaro and Wegovy are different medicines, so switching from injections to Wegovy tablets or from Mounjaro injections to Wegovy tablets should always be reviewed carefully by a clinician. If you are currently taking Mounjaro, read our detailed guide Can I Switch From Mounjaro Injections to Wegovy Tablets? UK Switching Guide.
Can you switch from Mounjaro injections to Wegovy tablets?
Some patients may be able to switch from Mounjaro injections to Wegovy tablets, but it is not a direct swap.
Mounjaro contains tirzepatide. Wegovy contains semaglutide. They work differently, so the right approach depends on:
- Your current Mounjaro dose
- How long you have been on treatment
- Whether your weight is stable
- Your side effects
- Your appetite control
- Your maintenance goals
- Your medical history
At Pharmulous, we would review this clinically and discuss whether or how switching is appropriate for you. If you are considering switching from injections to Wegovy tablets, your treatment plan should always be tailored to your individual circumstances. UK Switching Guide and Switching from Wegovy Injections to Wegovy Tablets: What You Need to Know for more information about the switching process.
Can you go back to injections if tablets do not suit you?
Yes, this is an important part of patient choice.
If you try Wegovy tablets and find they do not suit your routine, appetite control, side effects or lifestyle, you may be able to move back to your previous injection treatment, if clinically appropriate.
This should not be done without advice. Your clinician would need to review timing, dose, tolerability and safety before switching back.
What makes Pharmulous different?
At Pharmulous, we believe patients should have choice — but with clinical oversight.
Some patients may prefer to stay on injections. Some may want to try tablets. Some may try tablets and later decide they prefer their previous treatment.
That flexibility matters.
Our role is not to push one treatment route for everyone. Our role is to help you choose the option that is safe, suitable and effective for you.
Pharmulous advice
Wegovy tablets may become a useful maintenance option for some patients, especially those who prefer tablets or find injections difficult.
But switching should be personalised. It should depend on your current treatment, dose, progress, side effects, lifestyle, medical history and long-term goals.
At Pharmulous, the best treatment is not simply the newest treatment. It is the treatment that works safely for you.
If you are interested in Wegovy tablets for maintenance, our clinical team can review your current treatment and advise whether switching is appropriate. Whether you are considering long-term semaglutide treatment, maintaining weight after GLP-1 treatment, or switching from injections to Wegovy tablets, we can help you find the most suitable option through a personalised clinical assessment.
